Had a blast camping! It was a nice, small group--four campers and one guide. Two day hikes, one medium-length and one shorter, each to a swimming/sunbathing area. Because it was a small group (any fewer and they would've canceled), we each got our own tent, which was very nice--the tent would've been crowded to share, but was perfectly fine for a solo.

No *major* injuries... )

Anyway, regardless, had an Awesome Time. If you're ever planning a camping trip or something, let me know if I can tag along.

So as I'm out on tonight's run, I'm listening to a Teaching Company lecture--Mark Steinberg teaching "History of Russia: From Peter the Great to Gorbachev". (The S.F. Peninsula library system is stocked with all kinds of goodies like that.)

Today's lecture is on the two successors to Catherine the Great--her son Paul and grandson Alexander I.

Steinberg says that Alexander was taught Stoic philosophy--in particular, that he was taught to model himself "on the great Greek philosopher-king Marcus Aurelius."

And, you know, while I'm sure that slip wasn't intentional, it seems appropriate. I couldn't say whether it's Russian, but it's certainly very Eastern Orthodox. I mean, after all, Marcus Aurelius was Emperor of Rome--the great Greek empire of antiquity.

Oh, sure, pedants may point out that at the time of Marcus Aurelius, the capital of the Roman Empire wasn't even on the Bosporus yet--at the time, the capital city was actually in Italy.(!) But still, who could possibly be more Greek than the Roman Emperor?

(And seriously, it wouldn't amaze me if a scholar of Russian history knew Greek--in which case, he very well might have read the Meditations in Greek. The slip of the tongue would be natural.)

Some further noodling on the not-currently-eating-animals thing.

More for my own notes than anything else, but it's not *too* long... )

So where does that leave me? Well, that's another post to make. Naturally, everything I do is going to involve some animals suffering. But there are a bunch of things that go into how guilty I feel, how much I feel like I'm participating in (and willing) the suffering. That's something for another post on another day. But, alas, no matter how I do the math, a big bowl of chili con carne keeps seeming to end up on the bad side of the ledger.

I'd managed to go 41 years without realizing that, um, cows only make milk if they've had a calf recently. So the milk industry--even at its best, non-factory-farm, cozy little red barn, mythical ideal--still involves getting the cows preggers every year, then dealing with the calf--the unwanted milk-production by-product--in ways that make me a sad panda. Dammit.)

NO, I haven't made any commitments. And this week is another one of those obscure fasts of the Orthodox Church, so I wouldn't be eating meat anyway. But, well, dang.
